Chapter 8

Leo had been standing silently in the doorway to the stable for the past few minutes, watching Jane wrangle a line of rope into some kind of knot he would never attempt. The second they’d gotten back to the ranch she’d bolted out of the car, Ollie hot on her heels, and vanished into the stable. To the horses. Where she felt safest.

His instinct had been to follow her, especially since she hadn’t uttered a word on the long drive back to the ranch, but he’d held back and left her alone. Mainly because he’d needed some time to erase the image of utter terror he’d seen on her face as she’d looked across the street to the police station.

It had taken every ounce of control he had not to override her protests. His cursory online search—cut short by too many interruptions in the diner and a slow connection—had produced a modicum of information that both eased his mind and raised new concerns. Instead of answers bringing him comfort, the questions he had now convinced him they needed help. Help he was going to demand she ask for. Until he caught her in mid panic attack, staring horror-struck at the police station.

Something more was going on. He was convinced of that now. Her reluctance went deeper than the fear of being discovered and made to face something she wasn’t ready to remember.

He hadn’t meant for her to confront all her other fears today, either. The Preston place was more than enough. But if he’d had any doubt whether her issues connected somehow to the police department, they were gone now. There was no faking a reaction like that. And he wasn’t in any rush to provoke another one.

That said, the day wasn’t over yet.

And so he stood. Silently. Watching her. Memorizing the sight for the day when she was no longer here. He suppressed a smile as she turned around in circles. She was so focused on the rope, she didn’t notice him.

“So if I put this this way, and then that way—” She stuck her tongue out slightly between her lips, chin tipped down just enough to obscure her eyes from his sight. “Aha! I got it.” She tugged the two ends of the rope and solidified the knot. “I was faster this time, Duke. What do you think? Will Trap approve?”

The horse nickered and bobbed his head up and down, and Ollie let out a yelp of greeting before bounding over to Leo.

His heart swelled as Jane raised her eyes to look at him. She fit. Despite how she’d arrived, despite having no recollection of who she was, she fit. Here, on the ranch. Here. With him. He wanted her, not just in his bed, but in his life. She didn’t just make his days better, she made them brighter. And it wasn’t just the loneliness talking; but that ache, that longing for what he had come to accept might never be, had been eased. All by this woman.
